Newcomers to Canada

First of all, welcome! We're here to look after all your banking needs and we make it easy to get set up and started with ACU. If you're a landed immigrant, international student, refugee or foreign worker, visit any Assiniboine Credit Union branch and bring your Permanent Resident Card or Temporary Permit as well as your other standard ID.

If you've been in Canada for five years or less and have never had an ACU account, we want to help you in your transition to life in Canada. We've put together a New to Canada package that offers extra value and special services:

Help getting started

Being able to access a bank account or use it to its fullest potential requires a bit of work. You need ID, an appointment, and maybe an interpreter. Or maybe your family is a little tight on money and you don't know where to turn. Or you hope one day to send your child to university, but you don't know how to make that happen. These programs can help:

If you need access to a bank account but are having some trouble, or don't know where to start, our Community Partner Referral Program is perfect for you

New Canadians can find that saving money and accumulating assets is challenging; our Asset Building Programs can help through programs, delivered in partnership with SEED Winnipeg, that can assist you in saving towards goals like furniture, tuition, or a house.

A Chequing account, with no monthly fees for a year

You don't need a Canadian credit history for an ACU Chequing account, plus we'll waive monthly account fees for a year and give you a free book of cheques.

A car loan, with no Canadian credit history needed

Having a car or truck can be a necessity here in Canada, but getting a loan to buy one can be difficult. As a new Canadian and ACU member, all you'll need is a minimum of 6 months of employment history in Canada. You must have a 25% down payment, but can borrow up to $30,000.

No-fee Mastercard*

If you're new to borrowing and have no credit history, no problem! We can set you up with a no-fee Mastercard that has no annual fee, and a credit limit of $500.

*Must meet all requirements. Permanent Canadian residents only.

A mortgage, with no Canadian credit history needed

Qualified applicants who have immigrated or relocated to Canada within the last 5 years are eligible for a mortgage to purchase a home and like any ACU member, pay as little as 5% down.

Safety deposit box, free for one year

Safely store your valuables and important papers, and be able to access them during regular branch hours, free for 1 year (small box, subject to availability).

ACU also partners with various community organizations to provide additional valuable services to qualified newcomers to Canada:

Help with re-establishing your career in Manitoba

We know that too many experienced professionals from other countries struggle to get their credentials recognized here in Canada. This is why we created Recognition Counts, a partnership between ACU and SEED Winnipeg to provide skilled newcomers with low cost loans to help you complete qualifications, exams & studies you need to re-establish your chosen career here in Manitoba.

Training and work experience in the Canadian banking system

ACU partners with other credit unions, Manitoba Start and the Province of Manitoba annually to provide opportunities for 8 to 10 candidates with previous banking experience. You are paid to attend a four-week culture and communications training program to introduce you to Canadian culture and the Canadian banking system. You're then assigned to a branch of a participating credit union for a paid, full-time three month work experience. If a participant's performance meets expectations, they are offered a permanent position at the end of their work experience.

Home ownership for Muslims

Understanding that traditional financing creates a barrier to homeownership for some in the Muslim community, ACU worked with the Manitoba Islamic Association to create an Islamic Mortgage. It's a unique financing arrangement acceptable to those of Islamic faith, making it possible for them to purchase a home.
