Wire Transfers

Something important to note: when you're sending or receiving wire transfers, it's critical that all information is correct. Spelling mistakes or having the incorrect routing information may result in the wire being rejected or being you being charged additional fees.

Because of the unique nature of each country's processing system, we recommend you visit an ACU branch and we can help you send or receive your wire transfer correctly.

Receiving Expand/Collapse

Receiving a wire transfer requires some planning. The person who's sending the wire needs to know very specific things about your account because of the way different currencies are processed.

Wires can be received in eight different currencies which will be converted to Canadian dollars. But if you have a US dollar account, wires sent in that currency will not be converted to Canadian dollars. See the list below for details.

Again, we need to stress that due to the unique nature of each country's processing system, it's best that you come in to an ACU branch, and we can help you with the information you need to ensure your wire is received correctly.

NOTE: Wire transfers may be subject to fees charged by the receiving financial institution, as well as any intermediary financial institutions. These fees are regulated by other institutions and will be taken from the funds being transferred.

There are specific instructions for different currencies. Below are the currencies that can be wired to you. Fill out one of the following Routing Instruction forms, and make sure the person who is sending the wire has this information.

You can receive transfers in these currencies:

* Currency will be converted to Canadian funds before being deposited to your account.
** Unless you have a USD account, funds will be converted to Canadian dollars before being deposited to your account.

Sending Expand/Collapse

Sending a wire transfer also requires some planning; the person receiving your wire needs to provide you with specific things about their account because of the way different currencies are processed.

Each country's processing system is different, so it's best that you come in to an ACU branch, and we can help you with the information you need to ensure your wire is sent correctly. When you are talking to one of our staff members, please make sure that:

  • we have the most up-to-date information regarding your legal address (post-office boxes are not acceptable as legal addresses), occupation and your name in our banking system
  • we have your valid identification on file (such as a driver's licence)
  • you are aware of our wire service fees

NOTE: Wire transfers may be subject to fees charged by the receiving financial institution, as well as any intermediary financial institutions.

Have your recipient provide you with all of the following information, including specific routing information they will get from their financial institution:

  • phone number
  • account holder name and full legal address (post-office boxes are not acceptable as legal addresses)
  • account number
  • financial institution name, branch number, and full address
  • countries require different codes to receive wires. This information, called routing information or wire instructions, directs the wire to the specific financial institution used by the recipient. Some common examples of routing instructions are: SWIFT Code (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication); IBAN (International Bank Account Number); and ABA number (American Bankers Association). In most cases, the correct information is only available from the receiving institution and should be provided by the recipient of the wire
  • NOTE: Intermediary institution service fees may be deducted, so confirm with the recipient that the total amount of the wire will cover any of these additional fees
