ACU Wins Commuting Gold
Assiniboine employees were doubly rewarded for their commitment to green and active commuting by receiving a Gold Award in the 2012 Commuter Challenge and being selected as the 2012 Commuter Friendly Workplace by a panel of independent judges convened by the Green Action Centre.
This year's Commuter Challenge team grew 33% from the 2011 team. 205 employees registered for the challenge and 184 employees participated in the Challenge the week of June 3 – 9. ACU tracked almost 17,400 green commuting kilometres, avoided 2.7 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, saved 1165 litres of gasoline and burned over 90,000 calories (equal to a soft drink a day for a year).
The Commuter Friendly Workplace Award recognizes a workplace that encourages its employees to choose green commuting options year 'round, and implements policies, programs, infrastructure and benefits to allow staff to do so. Dennis Cunningham, Manager of Environmental Sustainability, said "This reward is especially gratifying, as it acknowledges the ways in which we strive to be mindful of the environment all the time, not just one week out of the year."
This is the fifth time this uniquely Manitoban award has been given out and it provides a strong affirmation that ACU is heading in the right direction when it comes to supporting employee efforts to be environmentally responsible.
Receiving 2012 Gold Commuter Challenge and Commuter Friendly Workplace awards on behalf of ACU are (l-r) Nan Colledge, Community Program Manager; Sharon McMahon, VP Human Resources; and Dennis Cunningham, Manager Environmental Sustainability.
