We have four principles that guide our community investments.
Social Inclusion
We value and celebrate diversity and cultural representation and believe that our communities are stronger when there is full economic, social, civic and cultural participation by all.
We welcome the opportunity to support programs and projects that include, benefit or are led by those who may otherwise be marginalized and excluded.
Examples include programs and projects to:• Reduce barriers to access and participation• Open doors, create opportunities and expand horizons • Build leadership capacity and encourage active citizenship• Promote human rights and dignity• Address underlying conditions that lead to exclusion and vulnerability• Build awareness, understanding and mutual respect
Economic Self-Reliance
We believe in an approach to economic development that reduces dependency, builds capacity and strengthens economic links in the local community. We support the Community Economic Development Principles that have been endorsed by various community-oriented businesses, agencies and organizations in Manitoba.
We welcome the opportunity to support programs and projects that contribute to building a socially just and environmentally sustainable economy.
Examples include programs and projects to:• Reduce poverty and economic vulnerability• Create long-term solutions to underemployment and unemployment• Increase access to affordable housing and adequate shelter• Build economic and financial literacy • Promote fair trade• Encourage production and purchase of local goods and services• Develop cooperative and social enterprises• Promote local investment and socially and environmentally responsible investing, buying and consumption
Ecological Responsibility
We know that our long-term social and economic well-being depends on the well-being of life-supporting ecosystems locally and globally.
We welcome the opportunity to support programs and projects that contribute to the creation of positive solutions to environmental concerns.
Examples include programs and projects to: • Protect and restore biodiversity and threatened ecosystems• Find solutions and encourage action to address climate change concerns• Protect water ecosystems and access to safe drinking water for all• Ensure sustainable food systems and access to adequate food for all• Encourage choices and practices that leave a light footprint on the earth• Promote “green” buildings and sustainable urban design
Community Building
As a community-based financial institution our long-term success depends on the health and strength of the communities where our members and employees live and work.
We welcome the opportunity to support programs and projects that help to build strong and vibrant local communities and neighbourhoods.
Examples include programs and projects to:• Encourage community dialogue to find solutions to local concerns• Create safe, clean, ‘green’ and attractive neighbourhoods• Design communities around the needs and visions of local residents• Build community skills, knowledge, leadership• Build community identity and pride• Foster cooperation, goodwill and social connections among area residents
