At Assiniboine Credit Union, being a responsible financial co-operative is at the heart of everything we do. When you become a member, you are part of a co-operative that cares about making a positive difference for you and your community. Find out more about us.
What is a Co-operative?
A co-operative, commonly know as co-op, is an organization that is owned by the shareholders, or members, who use their services. As shareholders, members share in the profits and have democratic control over business decisions.
Co-ops exist in all communities and thrive equally in urban and rural centres. As community-based organizations, they are dedicated to the people and communities they serve. Co-ops can provide virtually any product or service such as housing, financial, retail stores, child-care, car sharing and funeral co-ops, to mention a few. The list is endless.
In short, co-ops care about the needs of their members and the quality of life in their communities, as well as the bottom line.
Co-ops are Worldwide
All over the world, co-operative enterprises provide products and services to their communities.
Local, national and international associations support the development of the united, growing and influential co-operative movement. Celebrating the Co-operative Difference
Recognizing the difference co-ops have made over the past two decades, 2012 has been dedicated as The International Year of Co-operatives, Co-ops across all nations will celebrate their invaluable contributions to our communities and socioeconomic development.
What it Means to be a Credit Union
Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit, financial cooperatives that provide financial services to their members. As financial co-operatives, credit unions are dedicated to the people and the communities they serve.
Historically, credit unions were formed in rural communities by farmers and labourers to help each other financially. The origins of co-operatives and credit unions date back to 19th century Britain. In 2012, Manitoba will celebrate 75 years of credit union history.
Credit unions worldwide offer members from all walks of life the chance to own their own financial institution and help them create opportunities such as starting small businesses, growing farms, building family homes and educating their children.
Credit unions are governed and promoted on a local, national and international level. Visit Credit Union Central of Manitoba, Credit Union Central of Canada and World Council of Credit Unions to learn more about the credit union movement.
